In the three years that he has been here,
he has worked every year to have a winning
football season. We would like to congratu-
late him for finally succeeding this year in
having a winning season and making our boys
into a real team.

Also we dedicate this book to him as ap-
preciation for his tireless efforts in making
all our class projects a success.

Foreword

Just This Minute

If we're thoughtful just this minute
In what'er we say and do;

If we put a purpose in it

That is honest through and through
We shall gladden life, and give it
Grace to make it all sublime;

For though life is long, we live it
Just a minute at a time, -- Sel.

Christian Trails

Since school has played such an important
role in your life, we have tried to incorporate in
this book some of the most outstanding events of
your schooldays.

We hope that you will in future years by means
of this yearbook be able to turn back the pages
of time and relive the many happy minutes you
have spent at Harbor High.

SENIORS OF 1955 -

This Commencement marks a turning point in your living.
For twelve ye ar s you have been in school as a student. You
have had the guidance of teachers and administrators dur-
ing these years. Your school, the organization of which you
have been an active member, has set standards, regulations
and provided activities for your welfare.

Now you are adults. You will be so considered by the
public. You will be competing with other adults for the things
you wish to have and for your accomplishments.

Opportunity before you is unlimited. You will limit your
chances of success and recognition only to the degree that
you are not willing to work. Your personality can be your
best calling card. You will find that you must influence
people if you are to achieve anything in life. How people
regard and respect you will be a clear reflection of your
own self respect.

In adult life competition is strong. In this competition
may I suggest (1) that you make a definite choice of values
or objectives, (2) that you think clearly, (3) that you cherish
the help others unselfishly give (4) that you give your best,
unselfishly to whatever you do, and (5) that you develop a
deep and abiding faith in God - one you can implement into
practice each day.

We feel that you have made a definite contribution during
your years here to making our schools better. You have
left records that will challenge our present and future stu-
dent body.

Make this year and this C o mm encement one of great
joy to you and your friends.

The Board of Education, the faculty, and I are most happy
for this great moment of achievement in your life. We wish
you much success.

Ralph S. Lanham, Superintendent

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. This is your good neighbor station W.
H. H. S. bringing you the eleventh hour news hot off the wires in our W. H. H.
S. newsroom. Since the seniors of 1955 from Harbor High School have been
making the headlines, tonight we have a special report on how they all have
survived in this atomic era.

First we shall take up some of the more serious of their achievements.
After graduating from Alliance College with a Ph. D. majoring in physics and
advanced mathematics, Francis DeGennaro is now revising Einstein's Theory
of Pelativity.

In the field of literature we find that Clyde Koski has written a book entitled
"My Trials in the Pit.” To date a million copies have been sold. J. E. (Maen-
pa, that is) is reported to have bought ten copies, since the book was dedicated
to him.

J. E. is also proud of Gerald Bordeaux, who is editor of the NEW YORK
HERALD. Gerald enjoys writing editorials on the work of his old classmate,
William Stegall, who is the 38th President of the United States. He was elected
on the Democratic ticket. We have an idea that he had some help from the multi-
millionaire stockbroker, Bill Smith, of Wall Street.

We are sorry to say that some have failed to uphold the high standards of the
class of *55. Among these we find Robert Cronquist, who is compiling notes for
a book about his experiences in the Siberian salt mines.

Tom Watts was recently brought to trial for siphoning gasoline from a local
service station. He was given two years at hard labor despite the competent
efforts of his famous criminal lawyer, Jane Koski.

Flash--A bulletin has just come through the Teletype in our newsroom here

:e

ft a mi

at W. H. H. S. Michael Kaihlanen is wanted by the F. B. I. dead or alive. If
found dead, please apply moistened postage stamp and address to: Mr. Charles
Altonen, Head Embalmer, Peabody Funeral Home, Chicago, 111. Thank you.

Those of you who do not have a postage stamp handy immediately contact
Miss Mary Jo O'Connor, head postage stamp licker at the Harbor Pony Express.
Also in the postal business we find JoAnn Jeffers, head postmistress in Kings-
ville.

There are also a number of specialists in this class. Among them is Vicki
Kinnunen, head fish cleaner at Lake Erie Fish Company. Bette Mackey is in
charge of lifting the Harbor lift bridge when it gets stuck. Carol Dean has
reached her goal in journalism, as she writes the obituary column for the STAR
BEACON.

(Turning to another field) On Carpente r Rd. we find Dick Hill and John Sand-
berg, co-owners of a huge three-acre farm. They have taken in two jobless
farmhands, Katy Beckwith and Kathy Lackson. These girls were willing to work
for practically nothing because they just love. . .farming.

Also working for practically nothing are Mary Ann Gustafson and Connie
Cafaro, garbage collectors, under the able direction of Ernest Hewins, Com-
missioner of Sanitation.

In the driver's seat of her glistening white truck we spy Janet Millberg, who
has finally made it after taking the truck driver's test 23 times.

Waite r Schramm, following in the somewhat damp footsteps of Ed Norton of
the Jackie Gleason Show, is the sewer cleaner for the Division of Public Works.

Assistant to the assistant's assistant at the Unemployment Bureau is Boneita
Perskari. We always knew she would make good.

In the Harbor te rritory Nick Ceve ra is the proprietor of the "Golden Bubble"
night club on Morton Drive. The bouncer there is Nancy Kissack.

The new owner of the Harbor Billiards is Rita McGranahan.

Now a couple of words from our sponsor, John Annala, owner of the "Gung
Ho" Chinese Restaurant, 2345 Main Ave # , the place where all good Finns con-
gregate. Tea, anyone ?

Still scanning the local news we find Deanna Floor operating an up and com-
ing business. She has taken over the popcorn stand on the corner of North Park.
One of her steady customers is Raymond Nurminen, who after a long and sad
experience, is now the president of the Ashtabula Alcoholics Anonymous Club.

Now moving to the lakefront news , at Billow Beach we find tall, blonde Mar-
vis Esko as a cigarette girl.

Out at Geneva-on-the -Lake Helmer Krans has opened his new, modern es-
tablishment, "Helmer's Pizza Palace." His next-door neighbors are Jim Huhta
and Tom Matte rn, who run a burlesque show there.

A little farther afield but in the same line Elaine and Eleanor Lehtinen are
running a hot dog stand at Coney Island. Ted Peterson drops in occasionally on
his time off. He is a lighthouse keeper in Newfoundland.

The class of *55 has also been outstanding in the field of entertainment. We
are most pleased with the accomplishments of Robert McNutt and Barbara Phil-
lips, who open their season tomorrow night at the Metropolitan Opera House.
JoAnn Carle is also proud of her husband as they are both proud of their six
children. Donna McCormick is now the conductor of the New York Philharmonic
Orchestra. Also in the musical field we discover Linda Johnson, head castanet
polisher for Xavier Cugat's Latin American Band. Dancing to the rhythm of her
castanets , Susan Hartman and Joanne Koski are mambo instructors at the Arthur
Murray Studios. Just think, George Schlieper might not have learned to mambo
without them.

(To turn to the lighter side) The Circus is in town. Barnum and Bailey are
indebted to the class of *55 for the invaluable services of Timothy Behrendt and
JackLundi in star clown billing. Starting as a 97 -pound weakling, Bill Nieminen
has finally progressed to the position of strong man of Barnum and Bailey.

Jim Myers has been touring the night club circuit with his Chorus Beauties,
among whom we find Betty Pananen Alley, Juanita Shick, Bernadette Santill, and
Betty Conklin.

Robert Sidbeck enters the home of millions of Americans every Saturday
afternoon as the television star of "The Pecos Kid." And a special favorite
among Ashtabulans is Paul Carpenter, who can be seen every Pabst Blue Rib-
bon fight night. He is the bartender.

(Now for a change of scenes) In California Eva von Fielitz has recently re-
ceived her seventh "Oscar" for he r outstanding portrayal of Ellie May in Metro-
Goldwyn Meyer's production of "Tobacco Road"

Two popular Hollywood stars who recently completed a movie entitled "Tor-
tured Love" are Celeste Rinto and Richard Davis.

At last Lois Lehtinen has finally reached her goal in life and is now Mrs.
Libe race.

Headlined in the sports field we find that Eleanor Meyers and Kathyrn Dox-
sie have recently conquered the world's highest mountain, Bunker Hill.

This year's Mr. America contest, we are proud to report, was won by
James Atzemis, and the Miss America crown was captured by Patricia Matha.

Ernest Thomas has taken over "Goose" Tatum's position with the Harlem

27

Globetrotte r s.

As a unanimous choice for fullback in the All-American nominations we
have another outstanding athlete, Myrna Christensen.

In the fight game Karin Haapala is a ranking contender for the heavy-weight
championship of the world. Not many Ashtabulans know that Patricia Bruckman
is wrestling under the name of "Molly the Mauler." When last heard from
George Johnson was guiding Albert Johnson and Jack Zeigler on their satari
through the jungles of darkest Africa.

Coming back into civilization, it is evident that the Harbor faculty has been
greatly modified during the ten year interim since this class graduated. Be-
cause of his excellent command of English, Stanley Giddings is now the head of
the English Department. Also in the dear old halls we find Kenneth Swanson,
Dean of Girls; Lorene Johnson, janitor; Janet Laatu, head basketball coach;
Freida Brunell, Shop Teacher; and Judy Lamb, Bus Driver.

Last but not least, Diana Laird and Bernie Haytcher have finally tied the
nuptial knot.

And there you have it folks, as up to the minute resume of the accomplish-
ments of the Senior Class of 1955.

Glad we could get together folks.

This is Jack Kansas signing off.

In September, 1942 we present seniors entered the bleak and unfamiliar
kindergarten room of Washington School, which is part of the Harbor Special
Schools system. Each morning our mothers kissed us fondly and, in parting,
gave us explicit instructions on correct behavior. On that eventful day we be-
gan an exciting thirteen-year pilgrimage through the halls of learning. Soon we
were all friends and were taking orders quite well from Miss Tilton and her
talking piano. With loving patience she taught us how to write our names, tell
time, and tie our own shoes. This year we had the honor of portraying circus
animals in the annual entertainment.

When we progressed to first grade, we were divided between the Jackson
and Washington Schools, at which time the great rivalry (Harvard- - Yale style)
of the two schools began. Second grade brought with it a wonderful project call-
ed "The Country Store' 1 which entailed empty food cans with labels from home.
We must haved saved the city rubbish collectors quite a bit of work that year. As
third graders we became aware of the opposite sex and several torrid love af-
fairs developed, which, however, died as quickly as they had blossomed forth.
Fourth grade was highlighted by the discovery in art and crafts classes of our
future artists, architects, and engineers. When we became big fifth graders,
our boys went forth to play the manly art of ball, and we had a number of games
between Jackson and Washington. We never did find out which school was bet-
ter.

Having reachedthe status of sixth graders, we were saddened by the loss of
our beloved Dr. W. E. Wenner, who died at the Cleveland Clinic on January 13,
1949. We heard Harbor’s carillonic bells sounded for the first time on January
17 at his funeral services.

Soon the last year drew to a close, and we received our cards bearing the
proud words "promoted to seventh grade". Then we had a real Commencement
and were awarded diplomas. At last we were ready for high school!

Our first few weeks in the high school were marked by utter confusion. More
than once we managed to get lost while changing classes, and we were inevitably
caught by Mrs. Eddy as we climbed with out armloads of books up the wrong
stairs. In eighth grade we had the unforgettable Occupations with Mrs. Cas-
bourne, not to mention some very memorable hayrides.

During the ninth grade the pupils from Mother of Sorrows joined us. Our
Latin and Spanish students, despite their misgivings, really did make it through
the First Year courses, and were on hand to take part in and to see the gala
Latin Banquet held in the old gym.

"Murder in the Family" was the name of the sophomore class play which we
put on as part of the annual "Mariner Varieties”. We were proud of the boys in
our class who had made the varsity football and basketball teams.

As juniors we worked very, very hard to give the seniors a nice Prom. We
presented the play "Rebecca”, sold sweatshirts, and finally put up the several
million miles of crepe paper required to transform the gym into a beautiful
ballroom. This was also the year we received our class rings.

As seniors we are looking forward to our next milestone, Commencement.

*

We wish our teachers to know that our appreciation of their friendship and
guidance extends beyond mere words. They have been a great part of our lives.
The last moments of the Thirteenth year are fast fleeting and we use them to
say, "God bless us, every one.”

complished a number of things.

Committees have been formed to issue char-
ters to organizations, review and hire the paid
assemblies for the coming year, and to plan this
year's Thursday afternoon assemblies. A moni-
tor service has been started in the lower hall in
order to guide and direct visitors and parents to
the proper offices.

It is hoped that in the future the council will
be able to give increasing assistance in the
managing of student affairs and will truly rep-
resent the student body.

L to r.: Eleanor Lehtinen, Carol Acierno,
Marvis Esko, Mary Lois Lindenmeyer, Karen
Knudsen.

Retiring from their majorette duties this year are Marvis Esko, head major-
ette, and Eleanor Lehtinen. Carol Acierno and Mary Lindenmeyer have two
years to complete and Karen Knudsen, three years.

Our majorettes have been busy all year. Early in the summer they began to
work on their routines for the 1954 football season. Among the many routines
they pre sented during the half-time shows were a military drill, a western rou-
tine, and a square dance routine.

Their work didn't end at the close of the football season because they had to
keep in practice for the Variety Show. They presented a delightful Spanish
number to the song, "Bongo Guitar," and another routine with lighted batons.
As always before, they will lead the band in the carnival parade.

Many months of hard planning and work by the junior class and their adviser,
Mr. Norbert Soltys, made the 1954 Jr. -Sr. Prom one of the finest Harbor High
has ever had.

Robert McNutt, junior class president, acted as master of ceremonies at
the banquet, which was held at the Swallowsala. Richard Hill, junior class vice-
president, read the Class Prophecy and was followed by James Laird, senior
class president, who read the seniors' Last Will and Testament.

Presenting tokens of appreciation to their advisers, Diana Laird and David
Kotila gave gifts to Mr. Norbert Soltys, junior class adviser and Mr. Harold
Caylor, senior class adviser.

Following this everyone enjoyed the dance held in Fawcett Gymnasium. It
was beautifully decorated with a false ceiling of stars and crepe paper. Indi-
vidual tables, with a lighted candle on each, were grouped in cabaret style a-
round the edge of the dance floor. Ray Jangels provided the music for danc-
ing.

Parents of the junior class members joined together to put on an afterprom
party and breakfast from 12:30 to 4:30 A.M. Entertainment was provided by
Bob Forrester and Nick Mahalick. Later the Dean Goodell orchestra provided
music for dancing.

A special thanks should be given to all the junior class parents who helped
to make a success of the whole affair.

Harbor started the season by playing Painesville Riverside in a preview game
at Conneaut. The two evenly matched teams battled their way to a 6-6 tie.

The Seamen journeyed to Jefferson to play their first WRL football game.
Despite their early lead, Harbor lost to the Falcons 20-13.

The following week Conneaut defeated the visiting Mariners 32-12.

The Mariners, playing their first game at home, were defeated by the Fair-
port Skippers 34-14. The bright spot in the game came in the last quarter when
Co-captain Tim Behrendt raced 67 yards
for a touchdown.

In the annual "Golden Anchor" game
At Wenner Field, Harbor got the "Golden
Anchor" back as they defeated Edgewood
in a thrilling game. The Mariners were
on the short end of a 13-7 score with on-
ly a couple minute s left in the game .

Jack Lundi threw a 16 yard pass to Bob
McNutt who fell into the end zone for a
touchdown. Joe Pinney kicked the extra
point and Harbor won the game 14-13.

The Perry Pirates invaded Wenner
Field and were defeated by a fighting
Mariner squad. Harbor rallied in the
second half to win the game 32-20.

Spencer was Harbor's third WRL victim as the Mariners won 51-6.

The Mariner s had to come from behind to defeat Geneva 26-19. Genevaheld
a 12 point lead midway in the third quarter when Harbor finally came to life
and pushed over three quick touchdowns.

year for outstanding work as cheer-

pleted two years.

pep rallies. In January they attend-
ed a cheerleaders' clinic with girls
from Northeastern Ohio.

The Mariner quintet had a successful season as they finished with more
games won than lost. The Seamen won the Western Reserve League crown their
first season in the league by compiling a perfect record of eight wins and no
defeats.

Seniors Clyde Koski, Bob Sidbeck, and Bob McNutt, together with juniors
Don Jones and Keith McCullough, rounded out the usual starting five for Coach
Elmer Gray. Senior Ken Swanson and junior Joe Pinney helped to back up the
team when the going was rough.

Clyde Koski was the leading scorer of the team as he held a fourteen point
average throughout the season and finished near the top in Western Reserve
League scoring.

Coach Norb Solty's reserve team had a very fine season as they lost only
a few of their ballgames. Bob Lampela, Dick Johnson, and Dick Macaro led a
strong, well-balanced group of ballplayers who played fine ball throughout the
season.

Ten returning lettermen, Francis DeGennaro, Keith McCullough, Ken
Swanson, Jim Gray, Pete Hewins, Joe Pinney, Henry Rossi, Dick John-
son, Bob Sidbeck, and Tim Behrendt, will form the nucleus of Coach El-
mer Grays’ 1955 track team. There will also be a large number of
hopeful candidates out to fill in the remaining spots on the team.

The track season will get under way with the annual Interclass Meet
on April 11-13. Boys in the upper four grades will be trying hard to put
their respective grades out in front.

There will be several small meets before Harbor has to compete in
any of the big meets. On May 7, the Mariners will take part in the an-
nual Mentor Relays and on May 10, they will compete in the WRL at
Wenner Field. In the District Meet on May 14, the boys will try to gain
berths for the State Meet which will be held the following Saturday at
Columbus.

The Last Will and Testament

Be it known: That we the members of the class of '55, graduates of the
Harbor High School, City of Ashtabula, county of Ashtabula, state of Ohio, United
States of America, on the second day of June, nineteen hundred and fifty-five
so as to benefit civilization and to endear our names to the human race, do
construct, formulate, and swear to this document- -our last will and testament,
disposing of the herein- stated articles in due and proper order.

Item first--It is our wish that our past mistakes and errors be forgiven and
forgotten publicly by our pedagogues and fellow students, before any em-
balming be done on our persons.

Item second--To the juniors we bequeath our choice seats in assembly. We
lend for masticatory exercise, between or during periods, all of those ge-
latinous coagulations adhering in more or less hardened form tc all seats
occupied by us in study hall and assembly, consisting mainly of juicy fruit and
dentyne. We request only that after each indulgence in said exercise thatthey
be carefully replaced for the future enjoyment of the undergraduates.

Item third- -We bequeath:

To Supt. Lanham a pair of gold plated Wiss scissors and a fully paid three-
week summer course in "Advanced Paper Doll Cutting" at M.I.T.

To Mr. Meehan, our beloved principal, we express our gratitude and leave
a year's supply of "Dull-O" pencils in order that he mav write out those re-
leases (called passes) which gave our mighty hunters the right to go forth
and seek wild life (thb four legged kind) and give the pained souls of Harbor
their semi-annual time off so that they might visit their respective dentists.
To lessen the amount of energy that he must expend at each assembly period,
we also leave him a collection of records setting forth the various complaints
he has to make of our behavior.

To Mr. Fawcett, "sure as the Lord made little green apples," we present
this fine Scotch-Irishman a round trip ticket to Hawaii in order that he may
spread his "words of wisdom" to the tune of whirling hula skirts as he romps
through the roaring surf.

To Norby, our illustrious class advisor for the past two years, who guided
us through our many ventures Sts penny-a-day, school daze, mums, and

sweatshirts, we bequeath a pig skin inflated with enthusiasm and thanks and
a box of ulcer pills to be used during next year's football season. The spon-
sorship of future senior classes we leave to him, to dispose of as he sees
fit.

To the unheralded heroes, the keepers of the school, Kenny and George by
name, we leave the dust from our illustrious feet. They also may consider
themselves heirs to the chewing gum under the desks where we so diligently
pursued our studies (never catching up with them, however).

Item fourth- -As our final gesture of parting the following seniors wish here to
will to their junior comrades the items listed belo^fc,
